5 Easy Tips for a Healthier, Leaner 2021

It's a New Year, and that means everyone is looking for a diet to go on. However, popular restrictive diets like Whole 30 & Keto produce results that are temporary & difficult to maintain. Plus, they don’t teach you what to do once you’re “done” with them.

So instead of dieting this year, try focusing on small tweaks to your lifestyle. We've listed 5 tips below that we do ourselves & encourage with our clients. Pick one to focus on this month & see how it works for you.

1. Aim for a more colorful plate at each meal: greens, blues, purples, reds, yellows. This automatically increases your intake of fruits & veggies (which means more fiber, nutrients & antioxidants). Plus, you’ll feel full with less calories.

2. Drink more water and less sugary drinks (soda, juice, Frappuccinos, cocktails). A good guideline for water is half your bodyweight (lbs) in ounces. So if you’re 150 lbs ≈ 75 oz of water per day. Staying hydrated helps with digestion & keeps you fuller between meals.

3. Cut down on processed foods; replace with more whole foods (ex: instead of candy, have fruit). Eating more whole foods allows you to nourish your body with all the nutrients it needs to thrive. Processed foods contain preservatives, food dyes, excess sugar and fat, all of which are not beneficial to health.

4. Make your favorite take-out dishes at home - like this Black Bean Burger with Guac & Cajun Fries). Less take-out immediately cuts down on excess oil, sodium, sugar & lowers overall calorie intake. Plus, it will make you a better chef! It's fun to challenge yourself in the kitchen, and you can get the whole family involved too.

5. Increase daily activity. Track your steps using a wearable device or app. Aim for 6-10k steps per day. All activity counts: workouts, walking to the store, shopping, going on a bike ride, doing chores, taking the stairs, walking the dogs, etc.

What aspect of your health are you focusing on this month? We chose #5, getting in more steps. Focus on mastering one of these consistently, then move on to another one when you're ready. You may surprise yourself with the results!
